My Irritability is an Art Form

Frustrations abound this week, and have been exacerbated by a deadly combo of sleep deprivation and hormonal issues.

  • Yesterday I was so exhausted at work - I was actually annoyed that my lunch wouldn’t heat itself up and float over to my desk. So last night I went to bed early. Things were going swimmingly until about 4am…when J was paged by work. I finally got back to sleep just minutes before I needed to get up for the day. Sigh.
  • I’ve had my Powerbook for about a year. It’s already been sent off for hardware problems once, but now the optical disc drive has died. I can’t even back up my data before I hand it over to be repaired (but Apple will do that for me, for an extra $50). Oh, and the latch is completely broken too.
  • That vegan whipped cream I was so excited about? The freaking can is defective. I was able to squirt some soy whip out just the once, but not since.
  • A package was delivered to the house today. It wound up on the back deck, soaking wet (it was raining all day). The contents were dry, thankfully, but mmmm, soggy mail. Yay!
  • The little man’s teacher announced a last minute field trip. Reeeeeeally last minute. I found out yesterday afternoon, and the trip was this morning. The school had scored free tickets to a performance at Orchestra Hall. I totally would’ve chaperoned if I could have. But it was such short notice and work was really busy so I was kinda sad. But then I found out mimes were involved. So maybe it was for the best.
  • I got a later start on the living room painting project than I would have liked. Now it’s half-finished (ok, maybe a little more than half) and the living and dining rooms are in complete disarry and it’s already dark when I get home from work each day and all I want to do is collapse into a pitiful little heap. Hoping to be done by December. Or maybe the new year. With the living room. And with the pitifulness.

Bonus: Not only is Vlog Santa back, he has his very own site now. And there are rumors and rumblings about personalized video greetings being offered soon. Vlog Santa will do anything for a buck (or 25 bucks).
Plus: I’m loving the Wall Dolls by Mia Hansen. Sadly I can’t make it to the Wall Candy event in Vancouver, but this Saturday is the second annual No Coast Craft-O-Rama. This time around in a bigger and better location. Sadly my budget is smaller and suckier this year.
And: A Final Explosion of Street Art…on Spring Street.

My son went to Orchestra Hall yesterday also. He thought the mimes were funny. He spent most of the evening trying to “show” me how funny they were. Somehow the jokes didn’t transfer over.

i think disgruntledness might just be the trend for this week. is it because we’re coming off of a holiday weekend? is it because we have all the stresses of the impending holiday to deal with? is it because we’re trying to finish all the things that we said we’d do in 2006, in the last month of it?

i think my disgruntledness is a combination of all of these things. and that makes all the little day-to-day things that much more annoying.

at least you have a badass tattoo to look at when you get irritable! it’s still looking amazing!

  3. ehow.comDW, that’s too funny - maybe they sat near one another and didn’t even know it! My son didn’t tell me much about the event, other than he liked the building, and that there was something to do with silence, but he didn’t elaborate. Hmmm.

Emily, seriously, it really is all of those things. And all of the minor slights just keep adding up. When I went outside this morning (I don’t have a garage) I found that some jackass had egged my car. My car that I’ve had for all of two weeks. Yes, egg the vegan’s car. And the slime has frozen! Apparently it’s really bad for the paint job too. Great!

  5. ooh! i want a wall doll! especially the one called “ari cat” because that’s what i call the kitten i live with. her name is aria, but i always shorten it to ari or call her kitten-face.

would it be awful if i made something similar? sometimes i see something impossibly cute and while i want to buy it, i also want to make it. i like the making part of stuff, but i don’t want to rip off other people. what do you think about that? can you take an idea and run with it without being a total jerk?

  6. You know, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that. I think it might be jerk-y if you copied it exactly and then started selling them too. But realistically I think you would totally put your own creativity and energy into it, and it would become a wholly different thing. So there.

Incidentally, some crafters do seem to be paranoid about this. Last summer I went to the St. Paul Craftstravaganza. I dropped a fair chunk of change and also snapped some photos. More than one vendor expressed concern that I’d be ripping off their ideas (I am seriously un-crafty so there is no danger of that). I had to reassure them that I’m just a photo nerd and nothing more. Hopefully I won’t run into the same issues at this coming Saturday’s No Coast Craft-o-Rama.
