Pointless Walks to Dismal Places

The little man has become obsessed with death and dying. And who can blame him? In the last year we’ve lost his brother and now both of our cats. I put Selina to sleep on Friday. It was time, yes, but it still sucks. So I’ve been dealing with the depressing with my usual - seeking out distractions. Yesterday morning I sat around in my pajamas, reading a stack of Dr. Seuss books to the little man and then watching season one of Arrested Development. Later we took J along with us to the Rock Rock Rock, for vegan pigs-in-a-blanket and a game of pool. Afterwards we went back to his new place to play Phase 10, and watch The Princess Bride for the umpteenth time. Then it was back home, to get back into my pajamas and watch more Arrested Development. Not such a bad day really. Today we’re looking at a visit to the Children’s Museum and some serious housecleaning. Keeping busy to keep my mind off things.

future pool shark?

Bonus: A very young and very handsome Tom Waits (via Amanda), on a strange 70s show called Fernwood 2Nite! featuring Fred Willard. Weird.
Plus: I had been unaware of “milk bags” until a contact on flickr posted this photo. Naturally wikipedia has some followup info.
And: The many faces of David Byrne.

  1. Here in Switzerland we get normal (ie, not chocolate) everyday milk in 1L bags - you plop it into a holding jug and snip off the two corners poking out and off you go! I thought it was very weird at first, but now since I’ve been appropriately swissified for the last 4.5 years I am coming around to it - less rubbish, and seeing as you have to pay CHF1.80 per bag of rubbish that is collected, it makes sense…

I’ll have to take a photo to show and tell.

  2. Yes! I would love to see that. And it does make sense. But it’ll probably be a while before they start selling soy or rice milk that way :-)

So sorry about Selina. I hope February rocks your socks off. In all good wasy.
I’m weirded out by the idea of milk in a bag, but like the idea of taking up less space in the rubbish bin when you’re done.

That should be “good ways.” But “wasy” sounds like it wouldn’t be bad either.

I got really excited when you linked to a photo of milk bags, but when I saw it was actually a bag of milk … man, what a disappointment.

fernwood 2nite was one of those things i fell in love with as a kid via my dad (ditto sctv), who has good taste in media. i turned b on to it & i think that tom waits clip is his fave as well, despite neither of us understanding the appeal of tom waits.

Oh, I definitely had those in Oklahoma and Louisiana growing up. I don’t remember ever having chocolate milk–but then again I hated chocolate milk. Oh the memories.
