All Quiet On The Midwestern Front

Yesterday was busy, in a low-key sort of way. Our ECFE class regrouped after a two week break for the holidays. One mom I talked with suggested that I look into freelance indexing. I’m enough of a geek that it’s an appealing idea, but I’d need to network a lot to get the good gigs. Anyone know any indexers? More books have been added to my already lengthy reading list, including the Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind box set by Hayao Miyazaki, just borrowed from a friend. James reminded me of my little crush on author/illustrator Marjane Satrapi…which led me to thinking about an issue she tackled in the Guardian last month. I recall hearing a sound byte about it on NPR, but just got around to reading up on it now (as I was too busy recuperating from my hospital excursions at the time). “France is set to ban the hijab in schools. But forcing girls not to wear it is as bad as forcing them to, says Iranian exile Marjane Satrapi”. My gut reaction was along similar lines, but she articulates her position far better than I ever could. Later on we watched the first DVD of The Beatles Anthology. For some reason the little man was more excited by a brief clip of Buddy Holly than by the fab four (or five or six if you count Stuart and Pete). And we rounded out the day with Dr. Fresh®. Our friend’s mother works for a dentist, and sent some fancy Firefly toothbrushes our way. They are billed as “perfect for kids who don’t brush” but I just think they’re cool, in a kind of annoying way. Once it’s switched on, the thing flashes a red light for sixty seconds before turning itself off. Unfortunately our first experience with it involved the little man trying to figure out how it works and how to shut it off, rather than doing any actual brushing. Better luck next time, I guess.
