Next week the Minneapolis chapter of Girls in Tech will be screening the documentary Miss Representation. The trailer is a bit hard to stomach so I can only imagine what the full length film will be like. But this is a topic that needs to be addressed. The portrayal of women in the media has bothered me for as long as I can remember. I’ve read a few reviews that attack this documentary for not being perfect - for not being this or too much of that. But we need to start somewhere to get the discussion going in earnest.
Five good things for this Wednesday:
- Last night we attended Shonen Knife’s 1000th show! The trio contains just one of its original members but it was still a blast. Photos here.
- Cartoonist Alison Bechdel ‘in shock’ after winning $625,000 ‘genius’ grant: The graphic memoirist is among 21 recipients of this year’s MacArthur Foundation no-strings-attached stipend. I’m so happy for her! She’s the ‘genius’ behind the Bechdel test.
- Meet Arabic Hip-Hop’s First Lady: Shadia Mansour.
Since launching a rap career around 2003, Mansour has gained fans in the Middle East, Europe and the United States with politically charged songs that take aim at the occupation of Palestine. She often performs in a traditional Palestinian thawb and, according to Hip-Hop and Politics, considers herself to be part of a “musical intifada.â€
- Earlier I got on my Shadia Mansour kick after watching her collaboration with Ana Tijoux, who is performing here next month. Unfortunately the same evening as my last wedding shoot of the year. Doh.
- The big Scottish independence referendum is tomorrow. Here are ten key moments leading up to the vote. If my son were in Scotland (he is a wee bit Scottish) he’d be just one year away from being able to vote!
In my previous post I mentioned that last Sunday saw our area’s Open Streets in Minneapolis but this Sunday is another one - in my former stomping grounds of Saint Paul. There will be plenty to do and see, including a performance by our friends in International Novelty Gamelan. And so far the weather forecast is looking mighty fine.
