weapons of mass distraction

Nothing Worse Than An Undetermined Person

Almost since its inception, this blog has been behind the times. For the last 4+ years it has been a static thing, with the same design, and each entry handcoded in pico. I joked that my site was retro. But not now. No, now it has all the bells and whistles. Searchable archives! RSS feeds! Comments! Permalinks! Comments with Permalinks! Pardon my enthusiasm, but it’s been a long time coming. Welcome me to the future (better late than never). Thank you, dear husband, for your help (again, better late than never).

Though I’m no stranger to blogging software. Initially we were going to use blosxom for this site, but the husband went with WordPress. And I’ve contributed to two collaborative blogs, one that uses blogger, another that uses Movable Type. And hey, I even have a livejournal account, mostly so that I can post comments to others’ ljs (but also so I could post to a writing group). So it’s about time. Now massdistraction can be a living, breathing entity.

But not one without growing pains, of course. I could have set up WordPress myself, but I needed assistance importing all of the old content (over 1200 posts, apparently). The husband wrote an import script in perl, that took into account all sorts of quirks of my old code, but it couldn’t handle everything. I’m sure we’ll be working out the kinks for a little while. Let me know if you see anything…funky.

    Hi! :))
You’re already on my Bloglines account, now that the site has a feed.
And it does feel good to comment, even if I have nothing to say other than: Congratulations, the site looks great!

Bring on the trolls! Er, um, no, wait…

I don’t know how you were so prolific for so long while hand-coding everything. The new look is great, too, although I always thought your old one was equally classy.

Damn. Looking smooth Sharyn. Comments AND delicious vegan recipes!?! It’s too much for me to handle. Massdistraction AHEAD of the curve? You ARE the curve.

comments! i’m so ridiculously excited about the comments!

plus, the design is very sleek and pretty, and i like that it uses a lot of my favorite color (red).

  14. massdistraction Says:

I totally thought of you, when I went with the red and turquoise.
Zophia, yer funny. The main thing seems to be, hey, comments! What a novel idea.
Sorry it took so long folks, but thanks so much for the favorable reactions.
I’m still all blissed out. Sigh.
I suppose that’ll last until the trolls and spammers turn up.
    C’est la vie.

I feel like going back and making all the comments I wanted to make in the past. Talk about a Mass Distraction.

    Thanks for being you..

I didn’t read this post, but I just wanted to say that I love your pics. Also, the photo entitled “things: dragon monster discovered in backyard” is Reptar from the Nickelodeon kids cartoon Rugrats. I must admit that I watched it when I was a little more than a rugrat.

  18. Moe Says:

Wonderful! RSS and comments have finally arrived!

  19. massdistraction Says:

    Thanks guys!

And yeah, Dan, I only found out that was Reptar after I’d posted the photo. We don’t have teevee, let alone cable (though I would love the Cartoon Network) - just a lot of DVDs. So the little man has never seen the Rugrats. That Reptar might even have belonged to the kids who lived in the house before I bought it.
