Keflavik’s Calling My Name

What to call it…cabin fever? Some form of withdrawal? I think it’s safe to say…I’m suffering from a fit of wanderlust. And angsty pre-30th birthday wanderlust at that. Today I’ve found myself reminiscing…about the relaxing respite I took in Reykjavik, Iceland two years ago. Visiting Iceland in February may seem crazy to some. I’d taken advantage of a super-cheap Icelandair offer. Under $300 round trip. And was pleasantly surprised to find a few things upon arrival. First, it warmer and less snowy there than it was at home. And for such a small city there’s a lot to see. And do. And eat (I’m thinking of the vegan offerings, specifically). I played the tourist a bit. Spent some quality time soaking in the geothermally heated Blue Lagoon. Did some reading and writing at Mokka kaffi, Reykjavik’s oldest (and coziest) coffehouse. Visited a museum or two. Spent a chunk of change shopping down the Laugavegur and Skolavordustigur streets. Took a bus tour to check out fumaroles, geysers, lava fields, volcanic craters, waterfalls, and more. Stayed in the embassy district of the city. Despite its generic name, our hotel was nice enough. But next time I’d love to stay at another. The ultra-cool, and centrally located, Hotel Borg. A girl can dream, right? Sigh.
